i often get asked what the difference is between those terms. oh no, maybe it is the same?” and “ah ok, so you mean agile?” or “i think agile is a better word for it”. design thinking is an iterative process in which we thrive to understand the user’s pain, challenge assumptions, redefine problems, in order to create new strategies and solutions. the lean startup methodology was born in silicon valley in the 90s, but the use of the word “lean” has its roots to toyota’s lean production system.

using eric ries words: “the lean startup provides a scientific approach to creating and managing startups and get a desired product to customers’ hands faster. it is a principled approach to new product development.” agile is a way of working, based on an iterative development, incremental delivery and ongoing reassessment of a product. according to the 12 principles of the agile manifesto, “working software is the primary measure of progress.” deliver a rough draft, then revise based on your editor’s suggestions. never deliver the entire piece all at once! this feedback loop makes sure that no product is created without a purpose to the final user.

my primary focus here will be on two of the most popular: lean startup and agile. it builds on the lean principles of eliminating waste and optimizing for the whole. since agile is open to changing requirements (hence the name “agile”), it is ideal for developing products and features quickly and just-in-time. we constantly talked with customers to deliver the features and functionality they wanted, and got glowing feedback. at one of the companies, it did not.

however, without a way of testing and measuring your initial business hypothesis, teams will have have no way of knowing if the new features are adding any business value. thus, the time it takes to pivot and test another value/growth hypothesis is much less than the time it took for the initial mvp. the problem with the notion of shipping a product and then seeing what happens is that you are guaranteed to succeed — at seeing what happens. while agile is focused on optimizing product development — the “build” part of the lean startup, it does not adequately address the “measure” and “learn” parts of lean startup, which are critical factors to a new startup’s (or product’s) success. without developing an initial value and growth hypothesis for your product, you might continue to build and iterate on vanity metrics or flawed business assumptions. startups (and established organizations) that want to innovate and introduce new products into market should use the lean startup approach.
